Designing Classroom Infographics in Canva: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Turn dense lesson content into clear, beautiful visuals your students actually remember — no design background required.

Visuals help learners organise information and recall it later. Canva makes it possible for any educator to produce polished infographics in under 30 minutes. Here’s the workflow we use at BoardBuffer.

1. Pick one idea

An infographic explains one concept well. “The water cycle” works. “Everything about climate” does not. Write a one-sentence takeaway before you design anything.

2. Outline the content first

Draft your headings and key facts in a document. Aim for:

  • A title that states the takeaway
  • Three to five sections
  • One supporting visual or number per section

3. Choose a template — then simplify it

Search Canva for “education infographic”. Pick a layout with a clear reading order, then remove decoration you don’t need. White space is a feature.

4. Apply a consistent palette

Use two main colours and one accent. Our own palette is deep navy, teal, and amber on a light background — high contrast and easy to read.

5. Check accessibility

  • Body text at least 24pt on a portrait poster
  • Strong colour contrast between text and background
  • Icons paired with labels, not used alone

6. Export for every channel

Download a PDF for printing, a PNG for slides, and resize to 1080×1350 for Instagram carousels. One design, many uses.

Try it: pick tomorrow’s hardest concept and turn it into a one-page visual. Your students will thank you.
